The New York Times > Obituaries > Reagan Had Long Struggle With Alzheimer's Disease

Sometimes there's God so quickly. And sometimes he takes his damn time.

Nixon, Reagan and Bush Jr. were the three principal stages in the utter destruction of the GOP--its slide into corruption, false piety and insane public policy that's done irreparable damage to the country and the world. And then there's the little matter of ignoring AIDS for nearly the entire duration of his presidency, an act of cruelty unfathomable to even the Republicans of today.

So no, I don't feel like giving him the respectful treatment due a human being, like talking about his long painful illness and the handful of positive things he accomplished while in power. Fuck him. Hitler's got a roommate now.

» Reagan and AIDS from BoiFromTroy

Luckily, I have been spared the "Ronald Reagan caused AIDS" diatribes for the most part (even though I thought it was a CIA plot)... Dean Esmay has his own evidence and a link to further evidence debunking this myth. Actually,... Read More

You just summed up why the Left will lose.

The Left has already lost. You've just summed up why the Right is going to Hell.

Say hi to Satan for me!

I reiterate: thousands of gay men would be alive today but for him.

He deserves to be thrown out for the vultures, not buried in Arlington.

At 27, Lazlo was the first of my more than 20 friends, enemies and acquaintances to die of AIDS in October of 1983. Ronald Reagan's lack of personal leadership on the matter was not to blame for their deaths or the thousands of gay men you mention.

That an horrendously terminal illness could be acquired through having sex was such a fantastic and outlandish notion to grasp then. Even with this knowledge promiscuity continued as it does today.

Reagan and his administration WERE slow to deal with the enormity of the scourge as was most of the country but did mobilize resources in short time. This was a case where The Great Communicator's mentality reflected that of the nation. FDR did little to save the Jews of Europe. Great leaders are judged by the totality of their actions.

As for your predictable and charmingly sincere hyperbole, there you go again.

Steve said:

Hey Mike,
I agree with you. Reagan was (until now) one of the worst presidents ever. He took credit for everything that had nothing to do with him (the release of the hostages, the stock market upswing) and shifted the blame for all that was entirely his administration's fault (the Iran Contra hearings, the "trickle down" theory). And he does deserve to be villified for not doing anything during the early days of AIDS (aka GRID) when a little information would've saved the lives of many of my friends. But, I don't think he'll be sharing a cell with Hitler. It seems to me he deserves to be emasculated for enternity by someone like Joan Crawford.

PS: By the way, the left is not going to lose because of your comments. The Democrats are probably going to lose because anytime someone's informed enough to question anything about the current Administration (one of the principles of Democracy) they are labelled a traitor. Unfortunately, ignorance has become the patriotic opiate of the people. Sheep go to heaven, goats go to hell.

Wow- you are a bitter man. Be smart and keep your comments to your blog lest someone knocks a tooth out of your cock-holster.

Mike B. Author Profile Page said:

Ah, abusive and homophobic. Way to put me in my place.

I overstated things a few comments back. "Could be" is fairer and more accurate than "would be." But we'll never know what might have been done to stem the tide in the early days, because the gay community was not worthy of his attention.

tbear said:

Regan killed gay people. He gave them AIDS. It was his fault because he banged all of them without a condem and stuck needles in their vains - it was ALL his fault.

Mark Bahner said:

"I reiterate: thousands of gay men would be alive today but for him."

Ronald Reagan forced gay men to have unprotected sex with multiple partners? When did he do that?

Xrlq said:

Mike, after posting hateful crap like this, you are in no position to lecture anybody about being abusive.

Gerard Van der Leun said:

You put yourself in the place you are in. No one can do more.

Fatmouse said:

Wow... The left truly has become the bleaters of hatred.

Sorry that Mr. Reagan made your side lose the cold war.

"I reiterate: thousands of gay men would be alive today but for him."

Thousands of gay men would be alive today if they didn't have lots and lots of unprotected sex with strangers.

What does it matter what a some bitter human being, whose only claim to fame seems to be the fact the he likes to take it in the ass, thinks about Reagan ?

It won't change anything anyway ..

Mike B. Author Profile Page said:

Many's the time I've pointed out how HIV-positive people do deserve some blame for their status; I'd never be enough of a doof to deny the obvious. And while the first victims must escape that blame, not knowing at the time that there was any danger in promiscuity, some of the same people must (posthumously) accept blame for insisting that the bathhouses stay open for as long as they did.

But Reagan was the President, the most responsible man in the country for the well-being of the public at large. He was handed a public health epidemic of a scale not seen in decades, and what exactly did he do about it? Provide emergency funding for the CDC in the earliest days? Refer to the epidemic in speeches to try to undercut homophobic panic and promote awareness in the gay community? This is the administration in which Koop became a renegade for telling sexually active people to use condoms, and that was well into the decade.

Reagan said nothing and did little on the subject, unwilling to associate himself with the gay community for an instant. And for all the blame carried by HIV-positive people (and by those of us who have not always been as careful as we should have been), he deserved a huge chunk as well. Jon correctly pointed out earlier that when a handful of people died from Tylenol tampering, the response was swift and serious; the only explanation can be that he was willing to let us, specifically, die.

tbear said:

I also blame Reagan for the thousands of suicides, drunk drivers who hit trees, DOAs from drug overdoses, etc.

Mike B. Author Profile Page said:

As well you should. Suicide and substance abuse were the two best ways to cope with the Reagan years.

tbear said:

Too bad you didn't utilize the first option at that time.

Mike B. Author Profile Page said:

And your respect for human life is thus demonstrated. Keep talking; you're not at Ann Coulter's level of hypocrisy yet, but you'll make it.

tbear said:

So cute to hear you discuss hypocrisy and the value of human life.

"Fuck him. Hitler’s got a roommate now."

When you croak I will hold the same sentiments towards you. How does it feel?

Mike B. Author Profile Page said:

As above, it will make no difference to me, as I'll be dead.

And I never pretended to have much respect for life. You, however, are attacking me for my insensitivity to it, and you've already been driven to wish death on me. To quote the late, great Chandler Bing, could you be any less coherent?

At least what I said about Reagan came too late to matter to him.

tbear said:

Of course it makes a difference, as you bothered to respond to my post.

Of course it proves my point that your sentiments are not driven by caring for gay people, but for resentment and hatred of Reagan.

Well my sentiments are that you are an insect and I would cheer someone stepping on you. How does that feel?

Mike B. said:

It creeps me out. Because I am still alive, and you're clearly somewhat unbalanced, and you're verging on making threats. Which kind of puts you in a pot-kettle situation: you are attacking me for no reason other than that I hate Reagan, not because you think my tone was inappropriate.

And excuse me, but the resentment and hatred -- which I fully admit to -- stem from the caring for gay people and how little of it Reagan did. It's called the law of syllogism.

tbear said:

I am not making threats (I don't feel the need to threaten bugs), but simply stating that I would cheer when you croak.

Who said I am attacking you? I am clearly not - I am just mirroring your sentiments. Does this creep you out? Perhaps you will feel the same looking into a mirror.

And you don't care about anyone - "I never pretended to have much respect for life"

PS: I don't care if I am a hyocrite. Can you admit you are?

Mike B. Author Profile Page said:

You are not mirroring my sentiments. I cheered the death of someone who isn't around to be bothered, someone whose work has made my life more difficult. You are harassing a still-living perfect stranger...and for reasons unknown, because, again, I have done nothing worse than you're doing yourself.

I see no reason to admit hypocrisy on my part. And, since it's my site, I don't think you'll get to talk anymore. Toodles.

Tom said:

Fuck these assholes! An ADULT doesn't DESERVE to die just for having sex. There is nothing SHAMEFUL or DIRTY or WRONG with two ADULTS having sex. What is shameful is having the power to possibly PREVENT DEATH and doing NOTHING. THAT is Ronald Reagan's "legacy" and that is what he'll have to answer for. Probably now.

smokey said:

Tom is right. Nothing is wrong with drinking either. And if you get drunk and kill yourself, it is Reagan's fault. We want to stick our dick into someone and have our cake too. Afterall, we had a gun against our head to fuck that dude. Nevermind there were no cures at the time. Nevermind more people died slipping in the bathroom. Reagan was a FASCIST by not bending reality to our tiny will.

Kevin D. said:

Mike, you say:

"I cheered the death of someone who isn’t around to be bothered..."

Does that mean you don't have the balls to do it when they're alive? When they could do something about it?

Yeah... this'll be the last time I come hear. You're a waste of space.

Tom said:

I wouls respond to smokey but I never called Reagan a fascist and I can't find anything else smokey said to be true nor is most of it even a coherent thought.

Tom said:

would. d'oh!

What I learned from this post:

Ronald Reagan was a god-like being who chose to use his powers for evil instead of good. Those who hate him the most reify him with more reverence than even his biggest fans could ever dream.

And that is what I learned from this post.

Jerry Anderson said:

This is one more reason why liberals are in a minority everywhere in this country. Their ideas suck, and they suck, but until right now I never realized how bitter and petty they have become. This is one more reason why I will NEVER vote for a Democrat, and we must do everything we can to make sure that lying fuck Kerry is not anything but a disgraced US Senator this time next year.

Maybe the people of Massachusetts will grow a brain and throw him the fuck out of office, too.

Jerry Anderson said:

The only reason people died from AIDS is because they were busy sticking their dicks where they didn't belong. I didn't want one penny of my tax money to go to men who see a hairy ass on a beach and say "Yeah, that's for me!"

If you fuck men and die, that is your problem, not Ronald Reagan's.

AIDS is just one more reason for liberals to blame Reagan for their failed lives. Good riddance to their kind.

Mike B. Author Profile Page said:

And thus we see a conservative lead by example. No bitterness here, Jerry.

BTW, if you're going to troll liberal sites with fags-should-die comments, realize that we can take the spam protection off your e-mail address.

Roger said:

That's a real loving attitude you have there. Jesus Christ taught us to love everyone and treat them the way we would like to be treated. Your comments are further evidence to me that the liberals have no heart nor compassion and the conservatives are truly the representatives of love and peace.

Roger said:

You expect compassion for people that are dying from AIDS, yet you have no compassion for Reagan's suffering from Alzheimers? Isn't that a bit hipocritical? Jesus taught us to love everyone, even the sinners. He forgave the harlot, he will forgive you. Where's the love?
